{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters near miss with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident happened on the third rotation when track officials were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two dudes running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is currently investigating the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and put on alert to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what happened after that point"
